Southwest

The states that make up the Southwest are:

Climate

Much of the Southwest is located in the desert. The land is dry and the air is dry too. There are not many rivers because there is not a lot of rain. The summers in this area are very hot! In the mountain areas the air is much cooler all year round. There are often afternoon thunderstorms in the summer. In the areas where the mountains are high enough, snow falls in the winter.

Plants and Animals

The desert regions have a lo of cactus plants and sagebrush. If you watch closely you might see an owl, roadrunner, or desert tortoise. But watch out for rattlesnakes!

In the mountain area, aspen and pine trees cover the land. Mountain streams are full of many kinds of fish. Moose, elk, and deer wander through the trees. In many places there are bear, mountain lions, bobcats and bighorn sheep. Have you ever heard a coyote howl?
