How have historical events affected the lives of your ancestors as well as yourself?

Section 3

In this Section students will collect their information and begin working on their final project. Before beginning this Section students should have some knowledge of how to make a Power Point Presentation. If students are unfamiliar with this, it may be necessary for the teacher to spend some time teaching students how to use this program. The focus of this presentation is not only for students to present their family history but to make connections between historical events and the lives of their ancestors in order to get a better understanding of their lives. Teachers may need to work closely with their students to help them make these connections.

Objectives:

DISCOVER your Family History

SHARE it with others

Questions to Consider: After completing the unit discuss the following questions with the class to determine their level of understanding.

1. What type of information will help others to understand you and your ancestors better?

2. What events took place that affected your life and the lives of your ancestors and in what ways?

3. When others read your family history what events help them to get a true sense of who your ancestors were and what their lives were like?

Assessment

Use the Power Point Presentation Rubric to evaluate students final project.  For the overall project, teachers should consider all the factors including discussions, students level of understanding as well as the products they have created.

Modifications

Teachers may feel intimidated by using Power Point for the final project and may not feel comfortable teaching students how to use the software. In place of this presentation. Students could create a Family History Album which they could present along with an oral presentation to the class.

Final Thoughts

Now that the students have completed this Unit they should have a better understanding of how history has affected them and the lives of their ancestors. This is a great starting point for future history lessons as it allows the teacher to present history in context of students' lives by making connections to their family history.
