Lesson 11 Putting It all Together Now that you have gathered all your information what do you do now? Part of what genealogists do is compile a family history in a form that can be shared with others. By sharing our information we help others who are looking for their families as well as fill in the blanks of history. Each one of us is a part of history as we have discovered and each of us has an important place in that history. Let's look at some family histories that have been compiled and put on line by other people. As you look at these notice what information is given and how this information helps you understand more about the lives of the people who came before us. Markham Family of Jennings Creek This is the homepage of some of our my own family ancestors created by Tommy Markham Activity Now it's your turn. For this lesson we are going to create our family history a little differently. Using Power Point you are going to compile your information to write a complete family history. Before you begin you need to decide who you will start with. Just as when we began out study, the easiest place too start is yourself. But you don't have to. Once you have chosen who you will start with decide where you will go from there. How will you present your information so that others can follow it. You can add links to other pages. Whatever, will work best for you. Talk to your classmates to get some ideas. As you begin to create your family history, think of some things you may want to add to "jazz" it up. Pictures, copies of Birth or marriage certificates, or graphics. Remember you must include at least three generations including yourself, and you need to give other people a sense of who your ancestors were and what their lives were like. Your presentation must include 12 frames including a Table of contents and resource page. If you think you need more information, use the links on the RESOURCE page to help you. Questions to Consider 1. What type of information will help others to understand you and your ancestor's lives better? 2. What events took place that affected your life and the lives of your ancestors? 3. When others read your family history what things will help them to get a true sense of who your ancestors were and what their lives were like? What I have learned You have learned that you are a part of history. That events that took place in the lives of your ancestors have affected who you are, the color of your hair, your religion, where you live, the things you eat, and the family traditions that you celebrate. Much of who you are is based upon the lives of those who lived before you. Many of these people braved some very difficult circumstances in an effort to create a better life for themselves and those who would come after them. You have opened the door to the past, a past that is rich with information and events that can give you a sense of who you are and how you will live your life in the future. Self-Assessment After you have made your presentation to the class use the Power Point Presentation Rubric to rate your performance. CREATE a document entitled Lesson 11 Presentation Self Evaluation. Evaluate yourself and include the grade you would give yourself for each section of the Rubric and SAVE the document in your Portfolio Final ThoughtsYou have had the opportunity to discover your "Roots". Through this discovery you have learned more about yourself and the lives of those who came before you. However, this is not the end, but just the beginning. Family History and genealogy can be a lifetime hobby and passion. Perhaps you have been bitten by the "genealogy bug."
