Purposes:

  • This series of exercises demonstrates various opportunities for active learning in which students start to construct and augment their knowledge base of this complex topic by independently researching a specific question and evaluating sources of online information. Next they join in an interactive process in which they are asked to participate in asynchronous online discussion of various questions, and share some of their evaluations of information sources. Finally, in assigned groups they are asked to collaboratively prepare for an online debate and participate in a synchronous debate of the topic of "Mandatory HIV testing in pregnant women and newborns".

Objectives:

  • Identify current recommendations and standards of practice regarding HIV testing of pregnant women and newborns
  • Locate and review the latest information on HIV pathophysiology, testing procedures and efficacy, and treatment recommendations for pregnant women and newborns.
  • Examine and discuss efficacy, legal, and ethical issues related to mandatory HIV testing in pregnant women and newborns

  • Locate and evaluate online resources that provide clinical information about pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations for pregnant women and newborns.
  • Read and discuss current ethical and legal issues concerning HIV testing of pregnant women and newborns .
  • Collaborate with assigned classmates to prepare for a debate of the topic: Should HIV testing of pregnant women and newborns be mandatory?
  • Debate the topic.
  • Evaluate contributions of peers and self to the processes of preparation and debate.
