Time: 2:45-4:00 pm Tuesday, March 18, 2003
2:45-4:00 pm Thursday, March 20, 2003
Location: School Library
Introduction: 2:45-3:00 (March 18)
Welcome to Creating Exciting
Scavenger Hunts! During this workshop, you will develop a Scavenger Hunt
and understand its use as an instructional tool. You will also learn to
create a webpage for your Scavenger Hunt by using a template in Netscape
Composer.
Scavenger Hunts are great tools
to teach and/or reinforce state objectives, Internet navigation skills,
research skills, and computer skills. You will select a state objective and
develop a series of questions with links to websites that contain the
answers. After finding the correct answer, students can copy and paste
the correct answer into the Scavenger Hunt.
Exploration:
3:00-3:30 pm. (March 18)
Before we begin, lets look at a
variety of Scavenger Hunts created by North Carolina teachers. (Bookmark any
sites that might be useful during the workshop.) Click on the links below:

Preparation: 3:30-4:00
pm (March 18)
Now that you have experienced Scavenger Hunts, lets begin to
think of a topic/objective from your Standard Course of Study. Click on Arizona Standards for AZ State Standards and Objectives.
Copy and paste into a Word Document your choice of Standard/Objective to work
with today. Also look at Technology Standards/Objectives that you will include
in your Scavenger Hunt. Save this Word File in your file on the desktop.
As we begin to plan our Scavenger Hunt, the questions we develop
become extremely important. Not only do the questions need to cover our
material, but also they need to be designed to include different levels of
learning. Two items to consider include: Bloom's Taxonomy and the Learner Action Verb list from Barbara Benson. (See
handout)
Access Employability Skills and look at the verbs used and the task
assigned. More than one level of learning is used, beginning with the simple
recall moving toward HOTS. The skills also reinforced include
manipulating databases of information, learning to research, and drawing
conclusions.
Second Session: Thursday March 20, 2003
Creating the Hunt: 2:45-4:00 pm
Click on Scavenger Hunt for the template we will use. Structure your Scavenger
Hunt based on the state standards, technology standards, and the age level of
your audience. Also, use at least three different
websites on your Scavenger Hunt.
