[Plagiarism] : Discussion Board
Peer Introduction
Use this discussion section to introduce one of your peers to the rest of the class. This is the first opportunity we have to learn more about the people in the class, so feel free to reply to some introductions to ask any appropriate questions.
Class Mechanics
In this discussion section we will agree on how the class works. This is a topic that affects all of the people in the class, therefore everybody’s participation is essential. Please post your opinions, comments, questions, suggestions regarding the syllabus, class activities, minimum number of postings per week, sharing class information with people outside the class, etc.
Note: The discussion board is a “resonating box” where ideas will be bounced around for everybody’s benefit. In order to have a natural flow of ideas in this forum you do not need to be too cautious about grammatical correctness on the discussion board. However, remember that politeness is always appreciated!
After reviewing the syllabus do you have any questions and/or suggestions about how the class works/should work?
What do you think about the activities for the class, are they relevant? interesting? too easy? too difficult?
Do you think we should share information posted to the class site with
people outside of the course?
In your opinion what should be the minimum number of weekly postings to the discussion board?

How does NAU define plagiarism?
Use this thread to post the three definitions of plagiarism you found on NAU web pages as well as a description of the consequences of plagiarism at NAU.
Definition
Plagiarism is defined in the Webster’s New Collegiate dictionary as: “an act or instance of plagiarizing”. Plagiarize is defined as:
-“to steal and pass (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own,"
-“use (a created production) without crediting the source”
-“To present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source”
How is this different of how your own culture defines and understands plagiarism? We are all interested in learning about how different cultures deal with plagiarism so please don't be too brief!
What do we think about plagiarism now?
Now that we have seen how plagiarism is defined in different contexts lets come to an agreement on the importance of avoiding plagiarism. Is it important at all to avoid plagiarism? Why?
Instructor notes:
1. Recap salient ideas from the discussion board
2. Possible questions for discussion:
I don’t think that you can buy, sell, lend or borrow ideas. So why shouldn’t I just use ideas/materials that already exist?
When I read something I would like to know if what I read is based on other material that can help me expand my understanding of the topic
If somebody else, someone intelligent and knowledgeable has already found very good solutions or conclusions on a topic why can’t I use their knowledge to advance my own knowledge?
Repeating what somebody else says doesn’t mean that I know. I learn only when I really understand and I am able to express somebody else’s ideas in my own words.
What should we do about plagiarism? Is plagiarism an important issue in academic life or not?
