[Plagiarism] : [Assignments] : Week 5 Quoting

Quoting

This week we will learn about introducing quotes, or direct quotations, into our writing. Although the underlying principle of quoting is the same across disciplines, it is useful to know the appropriate style guidelines to use in our fields. Each student will search on the web for the set of style guidelines used in her field. Upon sharing with the class the rules for quoting in our fields we will put those guidelines in practice working in groups as well as individually.

Note: For some of the activities this week you will work in groups. For information on the composition of the groups, group rules, and group roles review the Group area.

Activity 1 | Activity 2 | Activity 3

Activity 1: Style guidelines in your discipline

1. Search online for the style guidelines used in your discipline. For this activity you may ask your professors, peers, a librarian, etc. Once you find the appropriate guidelines, make sure to write the URL for the site where the guidelines are published. Subsequently, look for the quotation format suggested by the style guidelines.

2. On the Class Discussion Board, post a message with the name of the style guide, the name of the publisher, and the URL. In this way we can compare how different disciplines approach quoting.

Activity 2: Review articles in your field for quotations

1. Find 2 articles in your field of study. The articles may be part of the assigned reading for one of your classes. Verify the style of quotation in the articles using the style guidelines you found on the web. Make note of the different ways that authors use to introduce cited text in their writing. Compile a list of words and expressions used as quotatives. Post your list on your Group Discussion board.

2. Send a brief article (or URL to a brief article) in your field to the students in your group, so everybody can read the articles and be prepared for the virtual chat.

Note: It may be helpful to suggest a paragraph in the article that is suitable to be used in a quotation in the following activity.

Activity 3: Virtual chat to contextualize quotes from articles

1. Meet online using your group’s Virtual Chat room. Using the articles from the previous activity, the group should use the words posted on the discussion board to contextualize one quote taken from each one of the articles. The team leader will post the list of words and the contextualized quotes on the class discussion board.

2. Review the postings on the class Discussion Board to see how other groups contextualized their quotations.

Instructor note: Review the group postings and compile a list of quotatives that students can download to their computers to use in their own academic writing. Compile also a list of the style sites for students to have as a reference.
