MAT 119 – Finite Mathematics                         Review for Exam 3

To be prepared for exam 3, you should know/be able to do ALL of the following:

     (Graphing calculators WILL BE ALLOWED)

1)      Be able to use and understand the notation for sets (set builder, union, intersection, etc)

2)      Be able to use Venn Diagrams to illustrate any and all sets and set relationships.

3)      Be able to use the counting formula to find the number of elements in a union of sets.

4)      Be able to use Venn Diagrams with numbers to answer questions about sets.

5)      Be able to use and/or apply the Multiplication principle.

6)      Be able to work with factorials.

7)      Be able to identify and use the formulas for combinations and the 3 types of permutations.

8)      Know the rules for the probability of an outcome.

9)      Know how to construct a probability model and/or determine if a model is valid.

10)        Know how to find the probability of an event from a sample space with equally likely outcomes.

11)        Know how to find the probability of a simple event, or of a union of simple events.

12)        Be able to identify if two or more events are mutually exclusive.

13)        Be able to choose and use the correct formula for the probability of the union of two events. (2 different formulas)

14)        Be able to use the formula for the probability of the compliment of an event.

15)        Be able to use counting techniques to find the number of outcomes in an event and the number of outcomes in a sample space.

16)        Be able to recognize and/or use the formulas for conditional probabilities.

17)        Be able to test whether two events are independent.

18)        Be able to choose and use the correct formula for the probability of the intersection of two or more events.  (3 different formulas)
