What We Do...

Kayettes' main focus is to serve Flagstaff and the surrounding communities and to promote spirit on the NAU campus. We work closely with several organizations, including:

  • American Cancer Society
  • Big Brothers / Big Sisters
  • Flagstaff Family Food Center
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Special Olympics
  • and many campus clubs and organizations

We are also affiliated with the Kiwanis, International, and our members rotate to attend weekly breakfast and lunch meetings with our local Kiwanis clubs.

Our goal is to make a difference in the community we live in, and to have FUN doing it! We strive to embody the Kayette motto of "Spirit, Service, Smile" in all we do. We have seven active committees on which our members serve and which drive the activites of our group.

We meet once a week (Thursday evenings) and participate in a variety of service and social activities each semester.

Community (and campus) service is the foundation of this organization, and we coordinate and participate in many service projects—big and small—each year. Here are just a few:

  • Holiday Dinner for Senior Citizens: This day-long event has been the core of Kayettes' mission for nearly 40 years. Kayettes cooks and serves a free turkey dinner around Thanksgiving with all the trimmings to senior citizens from Flagstaff and Williams. Children from a local elementary school provide live entertainment by singing holiday carols. Donated prizes are distributed to seniors in a free raffle. For those seniors unable to attend, we deliver pre-plated Meals-on-Wheels to their doors. More than 100 people are served each year.
  • Trick-or-Treating for Canned Food: Each Halloween, we trick-or-treat through the Flagstaff community to collect canned food donations for the food bank.
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowl-a-Thon: Bowling to raise funds for a great cause!
  • Relay for Life: NAU Kayettes is consistently one of the largest fundraisers on campus for this annual overnight event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. A number of activities honor cancer survivors and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to the disease. Survivors are invited to share their personal stories and participate in a victory lap around the track.

We also love to have fun! We work closely with many other student groups and enjoy promoting a sense of spirit and pride on campus. Some of our social activities and traditions activities include:

  • Mr. Lumberjack Pageant: NAU students compete in this mock pageant to show their Homecoming pride. The winner receives an impressive prize package including a variety of gift certificates from local businesses, and rides with the Kayettes in the Homecoming parade in downtown Flagstaff.
  • Hot Cocoa Runs: In the spirit of Homecoming, members of Kayettes visit parade participants at their respective float-making headquarters and give out hot cocoa and cookies.
  • Retreats: We get together as a group (outside of our weekly meetings and planned projects) at least once a semester to enjoy good food, friends, and group traditions.
  • Formal: We put on our best dresses each Spring to celebrate the culmination of a fabulous year of sisterhood and service.
