West Fork A clasic hike up a major perennial tributary of Oak Creek. The lower 3 miles is a very easy and very beautiful hike, but also very busy on weekends. They want you pay extra to park at the trailhead, but you can find a pullout on the road. For folks who don't mind a fairly punishing 10-12 hour hike, you can start hiking at the head of the canyon off forest road 231 south of Flagstaff, and hike all the way to Oak Creek Canyon. This is about 12-14 slow but spectacular miles. The canyon is dry at first, then there are about 6 or 7 cold and unavoidable swimming holes (sometimes a little stagnant)to get through. You start finding an intermittent trail a while after the flowing water starts, and the last 4 miles to the end go much faster. Start early and hike steady to finish before dark, or just do it as an overnight. |
