Pumphouse Wash

There's no trail in this major tributary of Oak Creek, but its mostly easy boulder hopping. A nice way to do this is to start off of 89a by driving down the major dirt road which takes off to east before you get to the Scenic View and switchbacks, crossing Fry Canyon (very rocky crossing) and then the larger Pumphouse Wash - park here. Park another car at the bridge at the bottom of the switchbacks. Simply hike downstream through a pleasant alpine-feeling canyon. You pass Kelly Canyon, come to a major falls (bypass on left), pass James Canyon, and then Pumphouse enters a major gorge and remains very scenic for the remaining three miles to the bridge. Upper Pumpouse , above the deep canyon, and Kelly Canyon, can be hiked anytime and are very nice there is flowing water (March-April most years), especially the falls. Hiking James Canyon or lower Pumphouse would be dangerous with flowing cold water. About 6 or 7 miles total.
