Well, the end of 2006 was kind of a blur, always moving and working like crazy to finish school work. Then I went to Meiji Jingue at midnight to celebrate the new year and make a wish. All in all, it wasn't worth it. It was way too cold and the train lines stopped too early to be able to get home after waiting in line and walking out of that huge place. You are much better off staying home and watching the new years show, then going to a shrine on new years day. Or even better, if you can stay at a friends house that follows the Japanese customs of eating delicious food for new years, that is the best way to spend new years here, in my opinion.
