From 1996 to 1998 I have worked for the AT-SLICE project implementing the usability testing program for this National Science Foundation grant. My responsibilities have included: Usability testing, interface design, technical writing, database management. Have become proficient with a variety of multimedia software programs in the development of Environmental Science curriculum for internet and CD-rom disturibution. I am proficient in the use of: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Macromedia Director, Macromedia SoundEdit 16.
In 1981 and 1982 I setup, funded, and executed a project in conjunction with The Daily Barometer of Corvallis, Oregon to travel to Honduras, Central America. During a 3 month trip, I took photos and wrote travel articles for the Arts and Entertainment section of the newspaper. I also wrote music reviews and published poetry for the same paper.
While in Central America in 1981 and 1982, I captured nearly 1000 images of the people, landscapes, and archeaology of this incredible area. Upon my return, I gained employment at the Oregon State University Media Lab. In addition to my duties there (duplicating 35mm slide sets and cassette audio tapes), I taught myself black and white darkroom technique. I used this skill to process and print much of the material I had collected during my travels.
I continued to use the 35mm camera when I started guiding in Grand Canyon in 1983. The scenic images i captured during this period I used in slide shows to help sell river trips. In 1990 I began a project to photograph the birds along the river corridor in Grand Canyon. In a six year period, I have photographed and collected ornithological data on over 100 different species of birds in Grand Canyon. These photos I have since marketed to the Glen Canyon Environmental Studies and the Grand Canyon National Park. Several of these photos have also appeared in the Grand Canyon River Guides newsletter, The Boatmen's Quarterly Review, and in a recent book,Watchable Birds of the Southwest by Mary Taylor Gray.
In the process of photographing the birds of Grand Canyon, I became enamored with the calls and songs I was hearing. These songs are important in the identification of species in addition to their aesthetic appeal. I was inspired to reproduce the vocalizations of these amazing creatures. The result is an ongoing project to record birds on Digital Audio Tape format. Thus far I have cataloged over 200 recordings of more than 30 different species of birds in Grand Canyon.
For the past 13 years I have guided raft trips down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. Nearly half the time I have provided logistical support and participated in various scientific expeditions through the Glen Canyon Environmental Studies office. The other half of my trips were guiding commercial expeditions.
From 1978 to 1983 I was employed in a variety of field positions in which I was responsible for the collection and/ or analysis of field gathered research data. These positions ran the gamut of forest ecology research including: hydrology, soils, genetics, various tree growth studies.
I have been certified as a Basic EMT in Arizona since 1986. This training has been put to use since then in various ways: guiding in Grand, ski patrolling at Arizona Snowbowl, and attending ambulance for Guardian Medical Transport of Flagstaff.
