SET MISSION: We play an active role on campus and in our community by striving to promote open communication and education on issues surrounding sexual assault, domestic violence, gender sterotyping, and self-image. We provide an open forum for communication so that, as students and community members, we can enlighten each other with our ideas, experiences, and insights. We believe awareness, understanding, and knowledge are the keys to maintaining healthy relationships with each other and with oneself.

The Student Education Team is the education arm of Associated Students for Women's Issues, whose mission statement is "Education, Advocacy, and Outreach." SET is a peer education program with 15-30 student members. Our goal is to address gender related issues on campus through student educational interaction and passive programming. Every member attends an intensive training program and presentation leaders complete additional training in program content and delivery.

RAPE IS A NATIONAL CONCERN
Nationally 1 in 4 college aged women is a survivor of rape or attempted rape: over 80% knew their attacker (Koss 1987). Women aged 16-24 run a greater risk of being raped than any other population group (Koss 1988). While there are currently no definitive studies of college aged men as victims of sexual assault, we realize that male survivors do exist, and do suffer this form of violence.

WHAT IS SEXUAL ASSAULT?
Sexual assault takes many forms. It includes not only intentionally or knowingly
engaging in sexual intercourse or oral sexual contact with another person without
that person's consent, but also includes non-consensual penetration of any part of another person's body by any part of the perpetrator's body or with other objects. Any form of nonconsensual touching may be punished as sexual assault or other crimes (NAU Safe Working & Learning Environment Policy, Appendix L, 1995-96 Student Handbook, Arizona Criminal Code 13-1401).

WHAT IS WITHOUT CONSENT?
The lack of a person's consent can take many forms, including occasions when the victim is coerced by immediate or threatened use of force against the victim or property, and when the victim is incapable of consent because of mental disorder, drugs, alcohol, sleep, age or other similar impairment (NAU Safe Working & Learning Environment Policy, Appendix L, 1995-96 Student Handbook, Arizona Criminal Code 13-1401).
