The Purple Ribbon Campaign for Rape Awareness is focused during the first month of school (August and September) because more than 80% of rapes occur within the first three weeks of school. The purpose of this campaign is to take a PROACTIVE approach by educating college students. The purple ribbon acts as a constant reminder to others that rape and sexual assault are unacceptable in our society.

The purple ribbon
is symbolic because is represents all of violence in society. The
color purple is used because both rape and sexual assault fall into this
category. In 1996, rape was the fastest violent growing crime in
America.
