WHAT WE DID

We developed a field investigation using a standard scientific method that would be appropriate for middle school students. Our inquiry was to compare the total insect population in an area of old burn and new burn in a Ponderosa pine forests. Our inquiry was derived as a result of preliminary field trips to old and new burn sites and a trip to the Peaks Ranger Station, Flagstaff, Az.

The two burn areas are located on Elden Moutain; the old burn is the Radio Fire that occurred in 1977 and the new burn is the Side Fire which occurred in 1996. We expected to find a greater population of insects in the old burn area due to plant succession over a twenty year period.
