Rhetorical Analysis

In the article “What’s Wrong with Advertising?” David Ogilvy discusses the differences between advertising and political advertising. At one point in the article he even refers to politics as flagrantly dishonest”. Ogilvy compares and contrasts the different appeals in both types of advertising by using his own experiences in advertising to enhance his own creditability as an advertiser, and therefore considers his personal information to be logic as well. Ogilvy uses pathos to relate the stereotypical views of advertisement that most American’s know. Through Ogilvy’s use of the appeals we are able to see how the he uses corrupt ways of political advertising to disguise the corrupt was of advertising.

Synthesis

It may not appear that men worry about fitting into a particular image, but in Godsey’s article he states, “Our insercurity, vanity and newfound need to measure up to popular images makes us a marketing gold mine” (118). Some women spend most of their lives going from diet to diet and when they actually live and eat one little piece of chocolate cake they feel guilt ridden and then decide to eat a cracker a day to make up for it. A woman going to such extremes to “measure up to popular images” is almost common in today’s world, but would you expect a guy to do the same?  Godsey states, “It’s like I’m a woman. My self-esteem frequently depends on how I see my body, I seldom see my body in positive terms, and I’m susceptible to the messages about men’s bodies shouted at me from magazines, movies and TV shows” (117). Although it is not openly discussed, men still worry about fitting into the popular image.
